Social Software

Gartner recently predicted that social networking services e-mail as the primary vehicle for interpersonal communication.

We believe social software adds value simply because it supports a more natural and intuitive form of interpersonal communication. Where email fundamentally is a replacement of the formal “paper-trail’, social software stimulate the informal dialogue often shared around the water-cooler or coffee machine in office environments.  Social software brings this pulse and alignment to distributed professional networks – in the same way that Facebook enable us to keep up with our distributed social network.

There are a lot of social software platform offerings in the market, and it can be difficult to get a good overview. Given its core function, a basic premise for selection is openness and modularity. Social software needs to be a feature and not a separate application. Open source Web2.0 frameworks as Drupal fit this bill perfectly, but Microsoft Sharepoint is also a good alternative where internal collaboration is the main focus.
